Smith & Dress Wins Two National Awards for Environmental Logo
A logo designed by Smith & Dress of Huntington, N.Y., a Long Island based-marketing communications company, was cited recently with a Clarion 2006 Award by the Association for Women in Communications in Washington, D.C., a professional organization that champions the advancement of women in all communications disciplines. The group won top honors in the non-profit logo category.
Smith & Dress, a partnership between Abby and Frederick Dress, created the logo for National Environmental Education Week, part of the launch program for the Washington-based National Environmental Education & Training Foundation. A major mission of the NEETF is to foster environmental education.
The logo, shown here, depicted earth, sky, water, and wildlife. It was tied together by a sunflower rooted in a pencil.
Prior to the Earth Day celebration in 2005. Smith & Dress worked to promote National EE Week which drew over 350 partners. Among them: K-12 classrooms, university campuses and a number of nature centers, parks, zoos, aquariums, and museums.
The sunflower logo was displayed and linked on more than 500 Web sites. It was displayed by the American Zoo and Aquarium Association, Earth Day Network, Education Commission of the States, Environmental Council of the States, GLOBE, Keep American Beautiful, National Association for Interpretation, National Education Association, North American Association for Environmental Education, Student Conservation Association, United Nations–Environment Programme, and the Yellowstone National Park and Youth Service America, among others.
Earlier this year, the logo also was recognized with a Communicator Award of Distinction. An international awards competition, the Communicator Awards recognize excellence in the print media, audio, and video categories.
NAWBO/LI member Abby Dress is a media arts professor at Long Island University 's C.W. Post Campus in Brookville, N.Y.
