Small Business Administration

SBA Web site
www.sba.gov

If you had to select only one small business resource, the SBA site would be an excellent choice. The agency covers every aspect of planning, starting, financing, operating, and growing a business in depth; it even discusses exit strategies.

A seemingly endless list of resources can be accessed through this incredible site, including information and links to virtually every resource developed  specifically to help women who seek to start or who currently own businesses.

Of particular interest:

Office of Women’s Business Ownership

A downloadable PDF containing contact information for those interested in counseling at one of the 100 women’s business centers throughout the United States. Listings for centers in New York State begin on page 24 of the document:

Business.gov: the Official Business Link to the U.S. Government
http://business.gov

The home page of the new comprehensive business site for all U.S. resources contains links to information that anyone involved in the world of business will find helpful.

For information specifically geared to small businesses and especially women- and minority-owned businesses, click on the “Business Resource Library” tab near the top of the page. Just beneath the “Audiences” section, are links for information for the following business categories: minority-owned, self-employed, and women-owned businesses, among others.

Much of the material available for small businesses and women-owned businesses comes from the SBA, which is also prominently featured on the home page.

Of particular interest:

Links for the “Women-Owned” section of the “Audiences” category:
“Federal resources and assistance for women entrepreneurs and business owners”

Also to be found on the www.business.gov home page: a link for New York state and local “doing business” resources.

Entrepreneur magazine
www.entrepreneur.com

An outstanding and highly accessible site featuring much of the standard start-up and business operation material. However, Entrepreneur offers a greater and more conversational focus on day-to-day business activities, plus the types of articles one would expect to read in a magazine—which, of course, is the source for much of the useful information contained here.  Marketing, sales, finance, advertising and other key functions are covered as separate topics.

Entrepreneur also has much to offer women, including a separate home-based business category, a “Mompreneur” section, work/life balance features, and even ideas on stress reduction.

Inc. magazine
www.inc.com

Also the Web offspring of a successful business magazine, Inc. has become quite woman-friendly during the past few years. An entire Resource Center is focused on “Women in Business.” Most of the features in that section contain multiple features which, in turn, contain multiple resources of their own.

Of particular interest:
Inc. delves into the subject of e-commerce very well, as it does one-person businesses; also, partnership as a business issue is covered comprehensively and includes interesting and valuable information for women whose business partners are also their husbands.

Lots of good features on this site.
