Emergency Preparedness

Disaster Planning and Recovery
http://www.ibhs.org/docs/openforbusiness.pdf

According to the Institute for Business and Home Safety (IBHS), 25% of businesses forced to close by a natural disaster never reopen.

The IBHS and the Public Entity Risk Institute have co-published Open for Business: A Disaster Planning Toolkit for the Small to Mid-sized Business Owner. The toolkit, in the form of a downloadable PDF, contains a step-by-step guide for evaluating your risks, and protecting your resources. Essential “Business Continuity Forms” are provided, which cover everything from critical employee and vendor contacts to details about computer equipment and if, where, and how critical data is backed up and retrievable.

Published after hurricanes Charley, Frances, Ivan and Jeanne, but before Katrina, this guide focuses sharply on all of the steps we all should take to protect our businesses just as we should protect our homes.

An estimated 80% of all businesses in the United States are family-owned. Some experts, such as Steve Swartz, co-founder of the McGladrey & Pullen Family Business Group, organizational consulting professionals who specialize in family business, contend that the percentage is much higher.

Swartz writes, “Although often "invisible" to those on the outside, it is estimated that approximately 95% of all U.S. businesses are family owned, producing about 50% of the Gross Domestic Product.”

This site, overseen and maintained by Northeastern University’s Center for Family Business offers information on possibly every problem a family could face in operating and planning for the future of the business. A strong search capability enables readers to look through articles and research contributed by 40 universities and centers of excellence in family business research.

Among the key topics to be explored: Women in family business, conflict and dispute resolution, estate planning, inter-generational issues, non-family managers and employees, and even sibling rivalry.
